I got this note from Gene's son Scott and wanted to share it here with all of you,
who have been so lovely and sweet in sending your sympathies..we sure do have a great group of peeps here...HJS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Harriette,
Thank you for the kind words about Dad. He was a remarkable man and a wonderful father.
I wanted to let you know the circumstances of his passing. As you were aware, he had emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor on Christmas Eve this past year. The doctor said he had make incredible progress and was very pleased, and as so, cleared him to fly.
Dad traveled to Atlanta for a conference and fell ill with pneumonia the night he arrived. He was in the hospital the next morning, but his immune system was weakened from the chemo, and the infection spread. Added with the complications from his diabetes, the doctors couldn't do enough to save him.
So while he was sick, it came as quite a sudden shock. Again, thank you for the sympathy and he won't really be gone so long as we carry him in our hearts.
To the family and friends of Gene I didn't know him however from what I have read of him I sense that he was one of those wonderful people to know. I send my deepest smpathys to all. I believe he will be truly missed by all. My prayers go out to all.
I didn't know Gene either, but wanted to add that I'm so very sorry. Fifty eight is not very old and he was taken much too young, like the others who so recently passed. I lost a dear friend at the end of March, this year too. One of the hardest parts of getting older is losing friends who travel that road before us. When it becomes my turn, I will expect to see all of those people, big smiles and open arms, welcoming me home. RIP Gene.
